Frank Mikulka's Weekly Fitness Tip - 05/16/2005

Question:

I’m a mother of a 17 year old boy who “lives” at the gym. He’s a good boy, but lately his body is changing and with all the talk about steroids, should I worry and what should I be looking for? I would appreciate any help.
(Lois, Syosset)

Answer:
Yes, there has been much talk lately about steroid abuse in professional sports. And there is a growing problem among our young adults. I will keep it simple; here are some signs:

  • Sudden weight gain
  • Quick increase in muscle density
  • Aggressive behavior and mood swings
  • Compulsion to train all the time
  • Change in skin condition: pimples, red spots, etc.
Note that not everyone who gets muscular is on steroids. Hard work, good nutrition, genetics and balance in training cycles result in muscle increase and overall changes in the body. Get educated on the subject. There are websites and free internet articles. Finally sit down and have a talk with your son. Explain that steroids are not the answer long term.
