Frank Mikulka's Weekly Fitness Tip - 12/21/2004

Question:

Now that I have been lifting weights and using machines I feel great and after six months of consistent training, I’m enjoying the success. In a nutshell, what will I get out of training, so I can monitor my results? I want to be able to explain to someone exactly why I’m doing this. Help! (Stephanie, Baldwin)

Answer:
Congratulations for your consistent and disciplined training regimen. Here are the reasons why resistance training is the way to go for mind and body:

  • Increased muscular strength and endurance
  • Improved appearance- more lean muscle tissue. Muscle is a calorie burner
  • Combined with proper nutrition and a balanced workout program which means adding a cardio component, a reduction of body fat
  • Increased joint and connective tissue strength, a decreased chance of injuries to these areas
  • Greater self-esteem and a sense of well being: a more positive outlook on life
  • Improved balance and good posture
